There are few prettier sights in nature than bluebells in full bloom. Evening Post historian Keith Johnson looks at the hidden story behind one beauty spot famed for its bluebells. If you go down to the woods today …. For Preston folk down the centuries the thought of wandering amidst bluebell country drew them in their thousands to an area not far from town that became known as Bluebell Wood.
Of course what also caught the eye was the red-bricked Haighton House, home of Squire Anderton who dwelt there in the Georgian mansion, in a sheltered glade at the far end of the wood. In fact the name of Squire Anderton has become legendary down the decades. Back in Captain Gerard had partly pulled down the old hall and built the new mansion some yards distant. A devout Catholic, Squire Anderton in applied and received permission from the Bishop to fit one room up as a chapel. Squire Anderton enjoyed a busy and entertaining social life.

A diary written by his son Wilfred Francis gives us a glimpse of the life of a Squire at Haighton House. It seems that in those days the land around Haighton was full of game and during the season of the Squire had used his gun to great effect bagging 40 pheasants, 65 partridges and 74 hares.

The Squire and his wife Mary were blessed with a fruitful marriage having 12 children, but like many couples in that time they suffered a number of tragedies. Twins Elizabeth and Roger had died in the year of their birth. James Francis who was born a year later survived only until he was 10, dying of tuberculosis. Two years later another youngster Mary Francis died in her 10th year, the same year that Gertrude Francis was born.
Happily Gertrude had a long and fruitful life, marrying Robert Chadwick who lived at the Hermitage in Alston, and having eight children, dying in in Rome. Another daughter Elizabeth Frances born in became a Franciscan nun and was based near Stroud, dying in Michael dying, aged just 18, from tuberculosis and John a sickly youth dying in in his 15th year. That same year Frances Aloysia was born, another child destined to be short lived, contracting scarlet fever in from which she died.
